Gel vs Dip vs Acrylic: Which One Is Actually Right for You?

Every week someone asks us whether they should get gel, dip, or acrylics - as if one is objectively better than the others. The honest answer is that none of them is best. Each one is suited to a different situation, and the right choice depends on what your nails look like now, what your lifestyle involves, and what you're trying to achieve.

Gel: Best for Natural Nail Looks and Regular Maintenance

Gel polish is UV-cured liquid color applied directly to the natural nail. It adds gloss and prevents chipping, but it doesn't add thickness, strength, or length. If your nails are already a reasonable length and you want a clean, natural look that lasts longer than regular polish, gel is ideal.

The trade-off: gel lasts 2–3 weeks, which is shorter than dip or acrylic. It's also more susceptible to chipping if the edge of the nail gets hit repeatedly (if you type all day on a keyboard, expect your tips to wear faster). Gel removal requires soaking or careful filing - done incorrectly, it can thin the nail plate over time.

Gel is the right choice if: you have healthy nails at a length you're happy with, you want a look that reads as natural, and you don't need length or structural reinforcement.

Dip Powder: Best for Longevity Without Commitment

Dip powder lasts 3–4 weeks and is more durable than gel. It's also thinner and lighter than acrylic, which makes it look and feel more natural while offering more protection. Unlike acrylic, there's no monomer liquid - some clients with chemical sensitivities find dip more tolerable than acrylics.

Dip can add a small amount of length (usually with tips) but isn't the right system for dramatic length extensions - acrylics are stronger for that. It works best on clients who want a longer-lasting manicure without the weight and commitment of a full acrylic set.

Dip is the right choice if: you want maximum longevity, you don't need significant length, and you want something between the naturalism of gel and the strength of acrylics.

Acrylic: Best for Length, Strength, and Sculpted Shapes

Acrylics are the most durable system and the right choice for significant length extensions or clients whose nails break too easily to maintain gel or dip. A well-done acrylic set, properly maintained with fills every 2–3 weeks, can last indefinitely. The shape is entirely customizable - coffin, stiletto, almond, square, squoval, ballerina - in any length.

The downsides: they require more maintenance (fills rather than full removes), the application uses a strong-smelling liquid monomer, and removal must be done carefully by soaking to avoid damage. Done poorly - too thin, too thick, or improperly removed - acrylics can leave the natural nail weakened.

Acrylics are the right choice if: you want length you can't achieve with your natural nails, you have brittle nails that need structural support, or you want a shape that requires a hard base (stiletto nails, for example, can't really be done in gel or dip).
